Well at first you will encounter the word hashtag in twitter, as a new member of twitter society :) .
In every tweet you will see something prefix like this "#" (without the quote, it is the symbol itself)

When someone tweet about the the stand off in Scarborough shoal between China and Philippines, you will see something like this #scarborough in them.
It took me a minute to realize this (yeah a minute only), it is the way of the people to search other who has common topic about this, example if you search about #LOST (or #Lost, #lost, its not case sensitive though) you will get a list of tweet about the TV show. What you wont get are the tweets says that "I lost my pen in the bus" simply because the "lost" isn't presented with the hash tag.
The best thing in this, even the main message didn't have the word LOST, it will still show up because of the tag.
Example, "Who is hotter? Jack, Sawyer, or Desmond? #lost"
All in all it is a way to make communities of people interested in the same topic
